As any owner of an iPhone 6 Plus would probably agree, there has been a severe shortage of good cases available for it. The case situation for the regular iPhone 6 is fairly meager, but it is even more limited for the 6 Plus. That’s why, as the new owner of an iPhone 6 Plus, I was so excited to see the Thule Atmos X3 for the 6 Plus in my local Best Buy. They hit stores at the beginning of November and are available in solid black, black and white, white and pink, black and neon green, and black and Thule blue. I chose the one in black and Thule blue and it is very attractive:
The blue coloration is barely visible from the front–all you see is a blue stripe at the top and bottom of the phone–the back side is where you really see the color.
What I like about the case is the overall sense of quality and fit that it exudes. The black parts that you see in the pictures are a TPE rubber that feels firm and comfortable in the hand…and is just grippy enough without being too grippy. The blue parts are some sort of polycarbonate plastic. The case is rated for more than a 6 foot drop, which is very impressive, given its slim profile. I haven’t tested that aspect, and hope I never inadvertently do so, but it is comforting to know.
The case has a surprising amount of lip for such a slim case…noticeably more than the Tech21 Classic Tactical Case for iPhone 6 Plus. It isn’t a huge lip by any means, but it provides a decent amount of ‘lay on the table’ protection, even if you are using a thick screen protector, such as the Zagg Glass I have on my 6 Plus.
Buttons are easy to see and have a nice tactile response. Cutouts are precise and reasonably well-sized, except for the lightning cable cutout. Your Apple lightning cable will fit fine, of course, but some third party cables may not. I’m sad to say that the lightning cable for my car charger will not fit in my lovely new case.
The cutout for the audio jack is also a little on the small side, but it has accommodated everything I’ve tried to plug in so far–Bose Quiet Comfort 2, Yurbuds, Square credit card swiper, and Apple EarPods.
Check out my YouTube video if you’d like to see more about this amazing case, or stop by your local Best Buy to see it in person. I’ve got to tell you: I’m loving this case!
Update: On the lightning port cut-out, things are looking a bit worse than I first thought. The lightning cable connector for my 3rd party car charger was a bit on the large side, so I wasn’t that surprised that it didn’t fit in the Thule’s lightning port cut-out. Disappointed, but not that surprised. However, when I purchased its replacement–a Dynex lightning cable from Best Buy–this evening, I was sure it would fit, as it is only a tiny bit bigger than Apple’s OEM lightning cable:
However, I was so very wrong. There is absolutely no way that cable is going to fit. Interestingly, the dimension that isn’t fitting is the height–the width is fine. So, back to Best Buy it goes, and I guess I may have to spring for an OEM cable for my car charger.
All told, however, I still really love this case. It feels marvelously secure in my hand and I think it makes the iPhone 6 Plus even more attractive. So, if the price to pay is $19.99 for a new lightning cable, then I guess I’ll have to suck it up and pay it 🙂
