RhinoShield has made their reputation on exceedingly thin cases and bumpers with astonishing levels of drop protection, and their new SolidSuit and HoneyComb cases expand upon this, retaining the extreme drop protection and slim profiles of previous generations and adding a more polished and professional look. With one notable exception, these new cases also address the lack of grip which was the most common complaint about RhinoShield’s previous generation of products.
The SolidSuit cases come in two different varieties: a Leather Finish and a Carbon Fiber Finish, while the HoneyComb simply comes in a single variety: a frosted clear color. Both the Leather Finish and Carbon Fiber Finish versions of the SolidSuit are exactly that: finishes. There is no real leather or carbon fiber present in either one: they just have finishes that emulate that look, and they are actually pretty successful as far as appearances go. The Leather Finish looks like leather and the Carbon Fiber does a good job appearing to be carbon fiber. I don’t have sufficient experience to be able to judge the feel of the Carbon Fiber Finish, but as far as the Leather Finish is concerned, a single touch will confirm that it is most definitely not leather. This is not actually a negative thing: the Leather Finish cases have a very pleasant feel and a considerable amount of grip. The Carbon Fiber Finish cases, on the other hand, while nice to touch, are extremely slippery, which is a mark against them in my book. The frosted clear HoneyComb case is a good compromise in grip between the versions of the SolidSuit: it has a pleasant, slightly grippy texture and feels very good in the hand.
- 11 foot drop protection!
- Extremely slim: basically the same size as the Apple Leather case, but with far more protection!
- Excellent grip on the Leather Finish SolidSuit and a slightly grippy, non slippery texture on the HoneyComb case.
- Refined, professional appearance.
- Reasonably generous port openings should fit most third party lightning cables and many third party headphones.
- The frosted clear color of the HoneyComb lets the beauty of your iPhone shine though.
- Unlike its siblings, the Carbon Fiber Finish SolidSuit is quite slippery.
Conclusion: Overall, these are just outstanding cases. In my opinion, with the SolidSuit and the HoneyComb, RhinoShield has fixed the slipperiness issue with its otherwise excellent PlayProof and come out with some truly exceptional cases for the iPhone 6s Plus. Admittedly, the Carbon Fiber Finish of the SolidSuit is still extremely slippery, but there may be those that prefer a slicker case for reasons of easier pocketability. With a pre-order price of $34.99 for the SolidSuit and $29.99 for the HoneyComb, these cases are quite reasonably priced for the quality and features you get. They are available directly from RhinoShield in a single color for both the HoneyComb and the Carbon Fiber SolidSuit and two color choices for the Leather Finish SolidSuit: Black and Dark Blue. Many thanks to the folks at RhinoShield for sending me out these samples to review.
